Vancouver, BC – Music lovers wait in anticipation for musica intima’s season finale, silhouette, which features a remarkable 13th member: the cello.

“It is unusual to perform with a thirteenth member – the cello. It seems that we sing and play into each other's sound, digging deeper and soaring higher at the same time” says alto ensemble member, Liz Hamel.

silhouette features extraordinary cellist Ariel Barnes and showcases works for vocal ensemble and cello, including renowned Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock’s Exaudi. “Exaudi was commissioned for musica intima, so Jocelyn Morlock had our sound in her ear while composing. She knows our strengths and potential and came up with a piece which calls upon our artistry, and our desire to polish a piece of music like a jewel,” says Hamel.

Morlock originally wrote the piece to be featured in a concert that focused on memory, mourning, and loss, using the piece to explore the feelings one goes through as they consider the inescapable nature of mortality. “At first the piece is cool and ritualistic, as if chanting,” says Morlock, “And it’s meditative – it becomes more and more serious as there is a personal realization of what the text really means. There is a sort of a mounting horror before it reaches a climax and winds down at the end, with the idea of death as a comfort.”

Hamel describes Exaudi as “an extremely expressive, transcendent piece of music. It is difficult to talk about it without using metaphors of colour and shape, and that is exactly what we are trying to do in silhouette. We are trying to make connections between music and visually expressed forms of art.”

silhouette, which also features such musical gems as Jeffrey Ryan’s sensuous Angeline on Ossabaw, will be performed the evening of April 16th and the afternoon of April 18th at the Chan Centre’s intimate Telus Studio Theatre.
