awards & accomplishments

musica itnima is championing the development of contemporary choral music with our novum musica program, which supports and educates composers on writing for vocal chamber ensemble.

We  workshopped 6 pieces by 5 Canadian composers and 1 American composer on March 6th of this year. 3 of the composers attended the sessions in person, while 3 skyped in to the event from New York State, Quebec and Amsterdam!

novum musica is open to the public and is primarily targeted at emerging composers and intima audience who enjoy witnessing the ensemble's rehearsal process. The event was held at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music, who generously provided a venue sponsorship for the evening.

novum musica was really a terrific event, and I am so grateful for your initiative as an organization to give such a valuable contribution back to the new music scene. I was lucky enough to also have a piece read by the VSO at the Jean Coulthard readings in January, so I've been feeling truly fortunate to have now had a vocal ensemble reading of the same virtuosic & professional calibre (I recently noticed your designation as one of the top 3 Vancouver Classical Music Ensembles in both the Vancouver Courier & the West Ender - congratulations!)

This workshop you provided was exceptional to me because your reading of my piece Aitake not only provided me with the valuable chance to hear one of my pieces sung & rehearsed live by top-notch musicians, but also gave me firsthand interaction & post-reading conversation with professional performers … a live audience, an audio recording, a video recording, and an excellent addition to my resume. I've since gone back and revised my score as a direct result of this workshop, and now I believe my piece is an overall improved work: it is tighter, has cleaner notation, clearer instructions, & a greater sense of forward direction, all of which I feel I owe to having the chance to see & hear it interpreted live by Musica Intima.

So, again, thank you so much. I deeply value this experience, and I believe it will continue to help me write stronger & more polished vocal music.

-Lucas Oikle, emerging composer, Vancouver

In 2015, muscia intima earned top 3 rankings in two of Vancouver’s most widely read weeklies, the Vancouver Courier and the West Ender.

With more and more readers taking part in annual polls, musica intima was particularly delighted to “make the jump” into classical ensemble categories over our more traditional choral category placements!

In this year’s West Ender poll, musica intima ranked as the #3 Classical Ensemble in the City (behind the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Chor Leoni). We also jumped to the #2 Classical Ensemble in the City among Vancouver Courier Readers, after the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

To celebrate BC Family Day, musica intima launched an affordable annual event geared specifically towards bringing families together to enjoy choral music.

Featuring family-pack discounts and an early start time, we attracted a sold-out crowd ranging from young families and seniors (attendee ages were from 3 months to 92 years).

Highlighting in-house material for young children, this concert afforded our ensemble an opportunity to introduce a new generation of singers to choral music, and to make choral traditions accessible to folks who might otherwise miss out on regular concert times.

In 2014, musica intima completed our first artistic residency at University of Nevada in Reno, NV. Working with 3 choirs, 1 highschool ensemble, 2 English classes and a General Assembly of U of N music students over a 5 day period, the ensemble delivered 9 workshops designed to enhance the specific skillset required to work in a collaborative rehearsal process.

It was a fantastic experience for everyone involved, but don’t take our word for it:

“Let me say thank you so much for having the group on our concert series.  It was a great evening of music making and the crowd response was wonderful!  The residency was especially enlightening for my students and for all who came in contact with musica intima.  All my students came away with such a sense of appreciation for what the group could do musically but also as individuals.  You all have provided wonderful insights into the professional musical scene without intimidating the students.  The group was not only a wonderful ensemble of performers, but also great teachers who took the time to lead the students!  I am so very grateful for this marvelous musical experience.”
- Paul Torkelson, Director of Choral Studies, University of Nevada
