musica intima launches ground-breaking 2013/2014 season

July 11, 2013 | Featuring three new commissions, exciting collaborations and bold venues, musica intima’s 21st season is an exploration of the natural and spiritual world

Vancouver, BC—musica intima vocal ensemble is proud to announce its ground-breaking 2013/2014 season. “musica intima’s 21st season explores humankind’s connection to the natural world: not just our love for it, but our need for it—our uneasy dependence,” says Joanna Dundas, Artistic Coordinator. “This is one of the reasons why this season’s collaboration with other organizations, or ‘living beings,’ takes on a special meaning for us.”

musica intima’s 2013/14 season showcases new commissions by Ed Henderson, Imant Raminsh and Michael Oesterle, all of which are set in innovative spaces: from the massive timber and river rocks of the UBC First Nations Longhouse, to the minimalist “black box” of the Telus Studio Theatre. “We wanted the venues to highlight the distinct character of each show,” says Dundas. “A concert can’t just be about good music. It has to be an experience, and the venue is an important part.”

“You MUST hear musica intima. Stunning singing and musicianship”

musica intima's 2013/2014 season includes:

this land

A tribute to the Earth’s power to heal and restore the self, this land centers on two new commissions by BC composers Ed Henderson and Imant Raminsh. Based on Stó:lō Nation member Sonny McHalsie’s retellings of the Sepass Poems, the “first songs of the land,” these pieces remind us of the fundamental threads that link us to our natural surroundings.

About musica intima vocal ensemble:

“One of Canada’s most astonishing musical exports”
Raymond Tuttle, Fanfare Magazine

Internationally renowned for their warm and engaging stage presence, impeccable musicianship, and unique perspective on ensemble singing, musica intima has earned a reputation as Canada’s most exciting vocal ensemble. Lloyd Dykk of the Vancouver Sun said “the flexibility and agility that are a function of their small size is partly what makes them so exciting.” But what makes musica intima truly unique is that they rehearse and perform without a conductor. In rehearsal, they exchange ideas freely while exploring their own musical creativity. In performance, they engage the audience with a spontaneity and freshness all their own.
