August 2008 | musica intima wins fans worldwide at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Denmark
Vancouver, BC – musica intima has returned from performing three outstanding concerts at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Copenhagen, Denmark. The symposium was held from July 19 to 26, 2008 and featured some of the best choirs from around the world. Held every three years, this special event is hosted by the International Federation for Choral Music, and is a unique opportunity for choirs, conductors and choral enthusiasts from around the world to showcase their talent, share ideas and discover new innovations in choral music.
According to soprano, Katherine Goheen, who traveled to Copenhagen with her husband and baby, “Singing for audiences packed with conductors seemed like a natural and good thing for us to do. They were so appreciative of our connection to each other and our musical and artistic choices, and I think we raised our level in every possible way because they were there. It was gratifying that we created such buzz in Copenhagen since every group was so exceptional. Our last concert was an intense experience, with a full house and several hundred people turned away. My husband and daughter were outside with the 50 or so people who listened outside closed doors because they just wanted a taste of the experience. I think this festival experience will have an immensely positive effect on intima’s future.”
The buzz surrounding musica intima’s performances spread throughout the city, and the singers felt like celebrities. Tenor Peter Alexander heard endless positive comments such as: "I've heard so much about you, I've always wanted to hear you live." "You were amazing. You sound perfect and your performance uplifted and inspired me." "You make me proud to be Canadian." "Thank you for coming all this way to represent Canada, you kicked butt!" "You are showing the world the best that Canada has to offer, thank you." "Everyone has been talking about musica intima, I had to see you perform live."
Ingrud Fussenegger, a choral director from Vienna, exclaimed that their concert was, “..the best thing I’ve heard in a long time.”
Another highlight of the symposium was the attendance of the choral world’s hottest composer, Eric Whitacre at musica intima’s sold-out final performance. The house was so packed that he even had trouble getting in to hear a performance of one of his own compositions! Whitacre was so moved by the performance that afterwards he told the ensemble that, “the concert was so beautiful that it broke my heart.”
As Vancouver’s only professional vocal ensemble, musica intima is proud to represent Canada nationally and internationally through their extensive touring. Next April, musica intima will tour to Northern B.C. as part of Festival Vancouver’s Spectacular Music BC Series to communities such as Smithers, Quesnel, Burns Lake and Prince George. Combine that with a full self-produced concert series here in Vancouver and numerous concerts around the lower mainland and you get one busy and successful vocal ensemble!
